How to upgrade Wordpress on Webfaction

Posted by Mike on Dec 19th, 2008

I’m a relatively new Webfaction account holder and run this blog using the Wordpress software on their server.  I was up until recently on version 2.6, and felt the need to upgrade to get the new hotness in 2.7.

I gotta admit, I was a little nervous about upgrading my installation, but finally pulled the trigger.  I ended up going the easy route, using the Wordpress Automatic Upgrade plugin.  I didn’t know for sure how it would react, because Webfaction handles the original install via black magic in their admin panel.

If you’re interested in doing it yourself, here’s how I did it:

  • SSH to your server
  • Download the installation package
    cd ~/webapps/blog/wp-content/plugins
    wget http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.2.2.zip
    unzip wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.2.2.zip
  • Sign on to your Wordpress site admin area
  • Navigate to plugins
  • Enable the Wordpress Automatic Upgrade
  • Click on the Upgrade text and follow the directions!  It’ll even give you backup files to download along the way.

Now that you’re on Wordpress 2.7, automatic-upgrades will happen without the need for a plugin!
